Macalester played host to a St. Mary's team coming into the Leonard Center with a 12-2 record on the season and snap an 11-match slide against the Cardinals. All four sets were down-to-the-wire thrillers, with the Scots rallying back from a 25-27 defeat in the opening set to claim the next three 28-26, 25-23 and 25-23.
The Scots reach double-digits in the win column and are now 10-7 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC. The Cardinals fall to 12-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, and have their 11-match win streak snapped.
The Scots hit .316 and slammed 68 kills – including 22 apiece from team leaders
Brooke Hunter (Fy., Stillwater, Minn.) and
Laura Avena (Sr., Cesis, Latvia / Riga State Gymnasium No. 1). Hunter hit .462 for the match and Avena attacked at a .370 rate.
Joining Hunter and Avena as threats at the net were
Hannah Rehak (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Walter Payton College Prep) with nine kills and
Caitlyn O'Neil (Fy., Carmichael, Calif. / Rio Americano) with eight (on a .500 percentage).
Kasey McMaster (So., Oak Ridge, Tenn.) distributed a career-high 59 assists to set up the big attack numbers. McMaster and Rehak contributed three blocks apiece and
Cora Trout (So., Columbia, Mo. / Rock Bridge) led back row play with 24 digs. Avena added nine digs and
Emma Lehman (Fy., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) had eight.
The Scots, who passed last year's win total two weeks ago, play host to Bethel on Friday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m.
