Second half goals from
Will Matsuda (Jr., Portland, Ore. / Woodrow Wilson) and
Will Mackaman (Sr., Des Moines, Ia. / Roosevelt) lifted Macalester to its second straight shutout victory, a 2-0 decision over Wisconsin-Superior Friday night in St. Paul. The Scots, who blanked Northwestern 4-0 earlier this week improve to 2-3 on the young season.
Matsuda's goal, his second of the campaign, came at 56:59 and was set up by a pass from Mackaman.
Robin Forslund (Sr., Madison, Wis. / Memorial) assisted on Mackaman's first marker of the year and fifth of his Macalester career. Mackaman beat the keeper on a nice header from a set piece.
Zeke Vainer turned away three shots on goal to post the shutout.
The Scots avenge a one-goal defeat to UW-Superior in last year's season-opener. The Yellowjackets played to a slight 17-13 advantage in shots. They had 14 corner kicks, most which were defended well by the Scots.
"With each game we keep getting better and our understanding of how we play grows with each result," observed head coach
Gregg Olson. "With all due respect to Superior, I believe our guys deserved the result tonight. We were the more dangerous team.
"Superior is a very difficult team," he continued. "They play with confidence and are dangerous . . . especially on restarts. To manage a shutout against them is a great feat when you consider the number of times they get into the box on their service from play or restarts. I'm proud of our guys. We still have many areas to improve, but this game gives us a lot of confidence moving forward.
Macalester goes for its third in a row tomorrow night at home when it takes on St. Scholastica with hopes of reaching the .500 mark. After that the Scots open MIAC play next Wednesday (Sept. 18) at home against St. Thomas.
