Laura Avena (Sr., Cesis, Latvia / Riga State Gymnasium No. 1) collected her 1,000th career kill at Macalester to lead the Scots to a 3-0 sweep at North Central University Tuesday night in Minneapolis. The Scots hit .307 and decisively won by scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-13. Macalester spiked 41 kills, compared to 12 for the Rams.
Macalester moves over the .500 mark and stands at 6-5 on the season, while North Central drops to 2-8. The Scots led 12-4 in service aces and held NCU to a negative attack percentage. Mac led nearly the entire match.
Caitlyn O'Neil (Fy., Carmichael, Calif. / Rio Americano) joined Avena as a force at the net and finished with seven kills.
Hannah Rehak added six kills.
Kasey McMaster (So., Oak Ridge, Tenn.) handed out 20 set assists. McMaster and
Emma Lehman (Fy., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) each had four digs.
Avena, an All-MIAC performer, registered her 1,000 kills near the end of the third and final set. She becomes the fifth Mac player to reach the 1,000 milestone and first since Lauren Eberhart (2003-06). With 11 on the match, Avena now has an even 1,000 kills.
The Scots travel to Decorah, Iowa, this weekend (Sept. 13-14) for the Luther / ACM Invitational, where they will play Associated Colleges of the Midwest opponents Knox (Ill.), Coe (Ia.), Lawrence (Wis.) and Beloit (Wis.).
