Macalester opened its season Friday and Saturday at the St. Olaf / Carleton Invitational in Northfield, and split its four matches over the weekend. In Friday's matches played at St. Olaf, the Scots were toppled by St. Scholastica and Martin Luther, but in Saturday's matches at Carleton came back to defeat Bethany Lutheran and Crown by 3-0 scores.
The team's leading hitters for the tournament were
Laura Avena (Sr., Cesis, Latvia / Riga State Gymnasium No. 1) with 35 kills (2.5 per set) and
Brooke Hunter (Fy., Stillwater, Minn.) with 30 (2.1 per set).
Kasey McMaster handed out 5.2 assists per set and
Hannah Rehak (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Walter Payton College Prep) led the team with 12 blocks. Leading the back row was
Cora Trout (So., Columbia, Mo. / Rock Bridge) with 3.4 digs/set.
Avena was selected to the all-tournament team.
The Scots play Tuesday (Sept. 3) at Minnesota-Morris and on Wednesday (Sept. 4) play host to Crown. The Scots are set to host the
Macalester Invitational Friday and Saturday (Sept. 6-7) at the Leonard Center, where they will take on Northland, UW-Superior, UM-Morris and UW-Stout.
