St. Mary's moved into a tie for fourth-place in the league standings by holding the Scots down in the first half and going on gain a 51-40 win in Winona. Turnovers were even on the night, but the Cardinals led 22-6 in points off turnovers to improve to 9-3 on the season, 6-3 in the MIAC. Macalester drops to 4-8 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
The Scots scored the game's first four points, but didn't tally their third basket until the 6:03 mark of the opening half and by that time were down 16-6. St. Mary's, the third-ranked team in the MIAC in scoring defense, led 29-14 at the intermission.
Macalester gained some momentum in the second half and outscored the Cards in the period to make a game of it.
Taylor Pike (Jr., Ashland, Neb. / Ashland-Greenwood) scored all nine of her points in the half and the Scots pulled to within five points at 37-32 at 11:28 with an 18-8 run to start the period. St. Mary's, however, scored 10 unanswered points to go up 49-34 with 4:24 to go.
Pike led Mac in scoring with her nine second half points.
Kyanna Jones (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) had six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Veronika Jakubovie (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) led the way on the boards with six rebounds while also blocked three shots.
Courtney Euerle led SMU with 12 points to go along with nine rebounds, while Jamie Stefely added 10 points. Bridget Pethke dished out five assits.
The Scots travel to Northfield Saturday (Jan. 12) for an MIAC contest at Carleton.
