Women’s Basketball: Scots Hand Carleton an 81-51 Defeat for Big Road Victory

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team earned a lopsided win on the road with an 81-51 decision at Carleton College in a MIAC game Wednesday night at West Gym. The Scots are now 3-20 overall and 2-15 in conference play, while the Knights drop to 7-11, 4-13 MIAC.

Macalester got off to a great start, closing out the first quarter on a 13-7 run to take a 22-14 lead after one quarter, shooting 66.7 percent from the field. First year guard Megan Matthews (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) tallied five points in the run, while junior guard Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) and sophomore forward Cady Davis (Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt) each scored four points down the stretch.

In the second quarter, baskets by senior forward Ellie Corbett (Austin, Texas/James Bowie), Davis and sophomore guard Emma Karlin (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) gave the Scots their largest lead of the half, 28-17 with 8:34 on the clock. With the lead at 10, 35-25 following a three by Daley, the Knights scored a pair of baskets to end the quarter and make the halftime score 35-29 Macalester at the break. The Scots ended up shooting 51.6 percent from the field in the first half while holding Carleton to 36.7 percent.

Macalester came out of the gate quickly in the second half, with junior guard Sydnee Smith (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) and Daley scoring back-to-back baskets, and Matthews draining a three for a 42-29 advantage. Davis answered a three by Addy Huss with a conventional three-point play, then Huss tallied three points on a lay-up and free throw to bring the Knights to within 10, 45-35 with five minutes left in the third. From that point, the Scots tallied the next 11 points, including three-pointers by Matthews and junior guard Kendall Bernbaum (Dallas, Texas/Shelton School), and four points from senior forward Brooke Boroughs (Monroe, Wash./Monroe) for a 56-35 advantage. The teams exchanged baskets in the final second of the third to make the score 58-37 Macalester heading into the fourth quarter.

After the Knights opened the final quarter with a basket, Daley was fouled while attempting a three and made all three free throws. On the next possession, Smith stole the ball and found Daley at the top of the key for a three-pointer, giving the Scots a 64-39 bulge one minute into the fourth. Later in the quarter, Bernbaum and first year guard Faith Accardo (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Oaks Christian) made back-to-back threes for Macalester's largest lead of the game, 72-41 with 6:20 remaining. Carleton came as close as 27 points the rest of the way, but senior guard Adi Megiddo (Bellevue, Wash./Eastside Preparatory School) punctuated the victory with a three-pointer to make the final score 81-51.

The win avenges a 49-47 loss to the Knights back on Dec. 10. For the game the Scots outscored Carleton, 44-28 in the paint, and Macalester's bench tallied 29 points compared to six bench points for the hosts. The Scots shot a season-best 55.0 percent from the field for the game and hit 10-of-23 (43.5 percent) from three-point range, also a season high.

Ten Scots scored points in the win, with Daley and Matthews each registering 15 points. Daley added seven rebounds, six assists and two blocks, while Matthews made all three of her attempts from beyond the arc. Davis finished with 14 points and six boards, and Karlin notched eight points off the bench. Huss led all players with 21 points for Carleton.

Macalester wraps up the 2025-26 season with a home game against Hamline University on Saturday, Feb. 21. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center. The Scots will honor their seniors before the game.
