St. Thomas pressure defense too much for Scots

Box Score
Macalester hosted No. 9-ranked and MIAC co-leading St. Thomas and played a strong defensive game in the opening half, but the Tommies pulled away in the second half to win 73-44 at the Leonard Center.

The game's first 20 minutes were closely played as defense dominated play before UST went on an 8-1 rally to go up by 13 points.  The first half ended with St. Thomas on top 28-17.  The Tommies scored the first seven points of the second half and gradually pulled away.

Erin Murray (Fy., Sparta, Wis.) came off the bench to lead the way for Mac, finishing with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.  Her 11 points ties a season best.  Emma Leyden (Jr., Berkeley, Calif. / Head-Royce) also grabbed five boards, helping Macalester hustle for a 14-6 advantage on the offensive glass.  Kyanna Jones (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo), like Murray, collected three steals.

The Tommies, bouncing back from their first league setback of the season last weekend, improve to 12-2 overall and 10-1 in the MIAC.  St. Thomas was led by Anna Smith, who produced 20 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots.  Kellie Ring led UST's pressure defense with six steals on the night.  The Toms shot 56% from the floor.

The Scots, now 4-10 on the season and 3-8 in the MIAC, play host to Bethel on Saturday (Jan. 19) at 1 p.m.
