St. Mary's spoiled Macalester's MIAC opener Wednesday at the Leonard Center, sweeping the Scots 25-17, 25-22 and 25-20 by hitting .234 on the night. The Cards improve to 6-4 on the season and the Scots are now 5-6.
The Scots were led by All-MIAC outside hitter
Laura Avena (Jr., Cesis, Latvia / Riga Gimnasium #1), hot hit .357 and finished with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Hannah Rehak (So., Chicago, Ill. / Walter Payton Prep) was also a force at the net, leading the team with five blocks.
Glasha Marcon (Sr., Richmond, Calif. / Albany) finished with a team-leading 12 digs, while setting duties were split between
Anna Munson (So., La Cross, Wis. / Central) with 14 assists and
Kasey McMaster (Fy., Oak Ridge, Tenn.) with six.
Mary Nordick spiked 12 kills to lead SMU and added 10 kills each were Jenna Sullivan and Colleen Seba. Lexi Assimos had 33 assists and 12 digs.
The Scots host the Macalester Invitational Friday and Saturday (Sept. 14-15) at the Leonard Center. They will play Presentation (S.D.) and Dubuque (Ia.) on Friday and will challenge Minnesota Morris and Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday.
