Macalester opened the 2012 campaign by winning two of its four matches over the weekend at the Buc Blast in Beloit, Wis. The Scots went 1-1 each day. On Friday they swept host-Beloit 3-0 and fell to Dubuque (Ia.) 3-2, and on Saturday came back from a 3-0 defeat to William Penn (Ia.) to topple Marian (Wis.) 3-0.
Hamline won the eight-team tournament with a 4-0 slate, while Dubuque and William Penn each went 3-1.
Laura Avena (Jr., Cesis, Latvia / Riga Gimnasium #1) was selected to the seven-player all-tournament team after producing 3.9 kills per set and attacking at a .358 rate. She tied for the team lead with 11 serving aces and was second with 2.9 digs a set.
Macalester's other top threats at the net over the weekend were
Hannah Rehak (So., Chicago, Ill. / Walter Payton College Prep) with 20 kills and a team-leading nine blocks, and
Anna Trier (Sr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) with 18 kills.
Setting duties were split between
Anna Munson (So., La Crosse, Wis. / Central) with 52 assists and
Kasey McMaster (Fy., Oak Ridge, Tenn.) with 35.
Glasha Marcon (Sr., Richmond, Calif. / Albany) led the way in the back row with 4.4 digs per set.
The Scots play road matches Tuesday (Sept. 4) at Minnesota-Morris and Wednesday (Sept. 15) at Crown. They then journey to Thousand Oaks, Calif., for the Sept. 7-8 Cal Lutheran Tournament.
