Macalester trailed for over 60 minutes before
Paul Lund (Jr., Madison, Wis. / West) headed in a long set-piece from about 50 yards out off the foot of
Wilson Craine (Sr., Waunakee, Wis. / Middleton) to tie the match at 1-1 in the 84th minute. However, the Scots suffered a heart-breaking defeat when an outstanding shot from 30 yards out into the top right corner of the net in the eighth minute of overtime play gave the Cobbers the 2-1 victory.
Concordia scored first, going on top at 19:01, and the scored remained 1-0 until Lund's first career goal at Macalester came at 83:06. That was one of several second half chances for the Scots, who had a 13-5 lead in shots in the period. Concordia's game-winner came at 97:42 when Jannick Bettels made his long-range try.
The defeat drops Macalester to 2-3 in MIAC play and 2-8-1 overall. The Cobbers are 2-4 in the MIAC, 5-6 overall.
Macalester plays host to St. Norbert (Wis.) Sunday (Oct. 7) at 3 p.m. The team returns to MIAC play next Wednesday (Oct. 10) at St. Thomas with an opportunity to even its conference mark.
