Scots rally past Hamline 61-60

Macalester out-scored host Hamline 11-4 down the stretch to escape with a 61-60 MIAC victory at Hamline.  Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) recorded her third double-double in five games, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds, and sinking the game-winning free throw with :20 to play. 

The comeback win brings Macalester to 7-9 overall and 5-8 in the MIAC.  Hamline drops its sixth straight, including its last four by a combined seven points, and is now 4-12 on the season, 3-10 in MIAC play.

Shannon Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) added 15 points for the Scots on a red-hot 5-for-7 three-point shooting performance.  Maggie Wood (Sr., Oregon, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) handed out five assists and scored eight points.

Hamline started slowly but went on a 25-6 run to take a 13-point lead at 33-20.  However, Macalester responded to that by scoring the final seven points of the opening period to get to within six points at 33-27 at the break.

Trailing 47-35 in the second half, the Scots turned up the heat.  A Rene three-pointer cut the HU margin to 58-57 and at 1:47 Shiedermayer nailed two free throws to put Mac on top 59-58.  Schiedermayer made one more free throw to make it 60-58, and after the Pipers tied the score 60-60 on a layup, canned another foul shot with :20 on the clock.

After playing four of their last five games on the road, the Scots return home when they host St. Olaf Wednesday (Jan. 25) at 5:30 p.m.
