Crown tops Macalester in close match

Macalester vs. Crown statistics

For the second time over the Labor Day Weekend, the Scots have been stopped in five sets by Crown College. Friday at the St. Olaf Tournament, Macalester fell to the Storm 15-12 in the third set. Tonight, the tally was 15-13. Four of the five sets went down to the wire and Macalester out-scored the guests in total points by five.

After dropping a 25-23 decision in the first game, the Scots hit .375 in set two and won 25-13. Crown won another close one in set three, hanging on to win 26-24, but Macalester forced a fifth set by topping the Purple Storm 25-22 in No. 4.

The biggest lead in the decisive set was 13-10 in favor of Crown. The Scots rallied with three in a row to tie things at 13-13 before Crown claimed the final two points.

Macalester served 11 aces and received 44 assists from Danielle Dweck (Sr., Sea Cliff, N.Y. / North Shore). Casey Colodny (Jr., Windermere, Fla. / Montverde Academy) and Julia Gartzke (Jr., New Glarus, Wis. ) each served three aces.

Laura Avena (So., Cesis, Latvia / Riga Gimnasium #1) hammered down 24 kills and hit .288, and Taylor Tinkham (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) contributed 15 kills on a .289 mark and also registered seven blocks.

Four Scots reached double-digits in digs, led by Avena with 16 and Glasha Marcon (Jr., Richmond, Calif. / Albany) with 14.

Naomi Anderson led Crown with 13 kills and Judy Mundt had 35 assists.

Macalester plays four matches Friday and Saturday (Sept. 9-10) at the St. Kate's Invitational. The Scots will take on Luther (Ia.), Bethany Lutheran, Alverno (Wis.) and Wisconsin-Stout.
