Scots finish Macalester Invitational with 2-2 mark

The Scots split their matches for the second day in a row while hosting the Macalester Invitational at the Leonard Center. Buena Vista (Ia.) handed Macalester a 3-1 setback in Saturday's first match, but the Scots bounced back by holding off Grinnell (Ia.) 3-2 in an exciting tournament finale. On Friday, Mac fell to Northwestern-Roseville and beat UW-Superior, and is now 5-9 on the season.

The Scots led 2-1 after three sets in their win over Grinnell, but were forced to a fifth set when the Pioneers won the fourth 25-18. Macalester claimed the decisive set 15-12, winning on an ace serve.

Danielle Dweck (Sr., Sea Cliff, N.Y. / North Shore) provided Mac with 38 assists, six aces and 12 digs to lead the way. Most of her sets went to Laura Avena (So., Cesis, Latvia / Riga Gimnasium #1), who finished with 24 kills on a .377 attack percentage. Taylor Tinkham (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn) added 15 kills and hit .406. Leading the defense were Bailey Rehnberg (So., York, Pa. / Suburban) with 14 digs and Casey Colodny (Jr., Windermere, Fla. / Montverde Academy) with 13.

Avena led the attack against Buena Vista with 29 kills on a .472 hitting percentage. Rehnberg produced 22 digs and Avena had 20. Dweck finished with 40 assists.

For the four-match tournament, Dweck averaged 8.9 assists per set. Avena averaged 4.6 kills a set and hit .390. Tinkham hit .392 and added 4.1 kills per set. Rehnberg averaged 5.9 digs a set.

Macalester plays home matches Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 20-21), hosting Minnesota-Morris Tuesday before returning to MIAC play Wednesday against Augsburg, both at 7 p.m.
