Macalester vs. St. Mary's statistics
Macalester headed into its MIAC opener on a three-match winning streak, but were swept 25-16, 26-24 and 25-22 by St. Mary's in Winona. The Cardinals, coming off an impressive weekend tournament at Endicott College (Mass.), improve to 7-2 on the year, while the Scots drop to 3-7.
St. Mary's dominated the first set, winning 25-16, but the Scots came back strongly in the second and third sets against the highly-regarded Cardinals. Macalester held leads of 23-21 and 24-23 before SMU rattled off three straight points to win the second set 26-24.
Mac grabbed an 8-3 lead in set three. SMU pulled even at 12-12, and the set would be tied five more times, the last 20-20, before the Cardinals pulled away for the 25-22 match-clinching win.
Glasha Marcon (Jr., Richmond, Calif. / Albany),
Taylor Tinkham (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) and
Laura Avena (So., Cesis, Latvia / Riga Gimnasium #1) contributed eight kills each to lead a balanced Macalester attack.
Bailey Rehnberg (York, Pa. / Suburban) led the defensive effort with 13 digs, while Avena added 10.
Danielle Dweck (Sr., Sea Cliff, N.Y. / North Shore) had 25 assists and
Anna Trier (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) served three aces.
The Scots host the
Macalester Invitational this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 16-17) at the Leonard Center. This will be a six-team tournament involving Macalester, Carleton, Buena Vista, Grinnell, Northwestern and Wisconsin-Superior.
