Cornell holds off Macalester 22-14

Macalester vs. Cornell statistics

Macalester came back from a 15-0 halftime deficit to get to within a point, but Cornell (Ia.) held off the comeback to win at home 22-14. Cornell improves to 2-0 on the season; Macalester drops to 0-2.

Macalalester received third-quarter touchdowns from T. Joe Loiselle (Sr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) on a 4-yard run, and from John Johnson (So., McKenzie, Tenn.) on a 34-yard pass from Clark Bledsoe (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla. / Episcopal).

Levi Brown (So., Winona, Minn. / Rushford-Peterson) led the defense with eight tackles. Joe Dykema (So., Roseville, Minn.) had seven tackles and an interception, while Adam Bunkoske (Jr., Beaver Dam, Wis. / Wayland Academy) also picked off a pass. Will Dhonau (Sr., Fond Du Lac, Wis.) had a key blocked field goal in the fourth quarter and registered at QB sack.

Cornell quarterback Juan Flores went 18-for-30 passing for 256 yards and a score, and also ran for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Cornell avenges a 24-20 defeat to the Scots last year.

The Rams drove 79 yards on seven plays on their second possession to go up 7-0. A 72-yard completion on third-and-long set up Cornell's second TD midway through the second quarter, and a botched point after try led to a two-point pass conversion and a 15-0 lead.

Macalester's offense picked things up in the third quarter.

The Scots marched 62 plays on eight plays following the second half kickoff on a drive capped by Loiselle's 19th career rushing touchdown.

After Cornell could manage just a couple short possessions in the third period, the Scots scored again, getting 46 yards on four plays, including the TD strike of 34 yards from Bledsoe to Johnson.

A blocked field goal by Dhonau kept Cornell from extending its one-point margin in the fourth quarter, but the Rams went up 2-14 with 4:53 to play on the game-clinching drive.

A week from today (Sept. 17), Macalester travels to Waterville, Wis., to take on Maranatha Baptist College.
