Macalester's defense forced 30 turnovers and held Northwestern to a 32% shooting figure as the Scots ran past the Eagles 63-50 in Roseville. Playing their final non-conference game before beginning the demanding 22-game MIAC schedule, the Scots are now 2-1 on the young season.
The Scots tallied the final six points of the opening half to go up 28-22 at the break and started the second half with a 21-7 run to go up by a safe 20 points at 49-29 with 9:28 to play.
Macalester used a balanced offensive attack, with
Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) leading the way with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Maggie Wood (Sr., Oregon, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) justed missed out on a double-double, finishing with nine points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Shannon Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) led the defense with a career-best seven steals and also grabbed eight rebounds.
Jessica Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) added to the cause with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Kyanna Jones (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) contributed nine points and five rebounds.
Mac enjoyed a 30-12 turnover advantage, led 31-13 in points off turnovers, and pounded to boards for a 26-13 margin in second chance points. The team's defensive effort helped overcome a difficult shooting night from the free throw line and three-point arc.
This was the first game between these two teams since the 1999-2000 season. Northwestern falls to 1-3 on the year. The Eagles were led by Mollie Sir with 17 points, Kristin Sczublewski with 16, and Jessica Fife with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Northwestern shot just 18% in the first half.
Northwestern got to within 11 points with just under five minutes remaining before its comeback try was cut short.
Macalester home-opener and MIAC-opener is next Wednesday (Nov. 30) against Concordia-Moorhead at 5:45 p.m. at the Leonard Center.
