Scots challenge Augsburg but fall 31-23; Loiselle sets all-time rushing mark

Macalester vs. Augsburg statistics

Macalester led 23-17 midway through the third quarter before Augsburg came back for a 31-23 win over the Scots in Minneapolis.  The Scots played well, but drop to 3-5 on the season, while the Auggies improve to 5-3.

T. Joe Loiselle (Sr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) ran for 114 yards to become Macalester's all-time rushing leader with 2,894 yards.  He passes Earl Bowman (1947-49), who ran for 2,851 in his legendary post-war Macalester career.  Loiselle ran for one touchdown and caught one of two Clark Bledsoe (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla. / Episcopal) TD passes.  With his 14th career 100-yard effort, Loiselle has 817 rushing yards through eight games this season.

Jole Miller (Fy., Missouri Valley, Ia.) led the Scot defense with an interception, nine tackles and a forced fumble.  Reid Callahan (So., Atlanta, Ga. / St. Pius X) and Joe Dykema (So., Roseville, Minn.) each were in on eight tackles.  Will Dhonau (Sr., Fond du Lac, Wis.) had a couple tackles for loss of yardage, including a 12-yard QB sack.   Macalester held Augsburg to a 3-for-11 third-down conversion rate.

The Scots scored 20 unanswered points after the Auggies went on top 10-0.  Short second quarter Bledsoe touchdown strikes to Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) and John Johnson (So., McKenzie, Tenn.) capped quick 60-yard drives to give Macalester the lead and a Loiselle 1-yard run closed out another fast drive to put the Scots up 20-10 with :37 remaining in the opening half.  The Auggies, however, came back with four straight completions to get to within 20-17 just before the intermission.

Auburn Jimenez (So., East Los Angeles, Calif. / St. John Bosco) kicked a 34-yard field goal to put Macalester on top 23-17 with 6:23 to go in the third quarter.  After Augsburg re-gained control with two touchdowns, Mac's Mike Adams (Jr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) returned a punt 43 yards into Auggie territory.  Augsburg stopped a fourth-down try at their own 29-yard line with 1:45 left to complete its comeback.

Augsburg quarterback Marcus Brumm passed for 356 yards and three touchdowns and Adam Carl pulled in 10 receptions for 103 yards and two scores.  Tyler Maxwell ran for 109 yards and a TD.

Macalester closes out the 2011 season Saturday (Nov. 5) at home against Trinity Bible (N.D.) at 1 p.m.
