Macalester played some outstanding soccer on both ends of the field, knocking off No. 7-ranked Loras (Ia.) 1-0 in front of a large and supportive home field crowd Sunday afternoon. The DuHawks, who defeated Macalester twice a year ago, including a 2-0 triumph in the second round of the NCAA Division III second round, and over the past several years have become a national powerhouse.
The Scots out-shot Loras 16-8 and asked goalkeeper
Matt Weyer (Jr., Cedarburg, Wis.) to make just one save.
Stephen Murphy-Logue (Sr., Anchorage, Ak. / West) headed in an
Erik Johnson (Sr., Bethesda, Md. / Landon) cross from three yards out in the 65th minute to account for the game's only goal. Macalester fired five shots on goal, including two by Johnson.
Seven yellow cards were handed out on the day.
Macalester is off to its first 3-0 start to a season since 1998 and looks for its fourth straight win when it plays host to Nebraska Wesleyan Friday (Sept. 10) at 4:30 p.m. The Scots haven't yielded a goal over their first three matches.
