Scots beat Hamline 74-48; Move into first-place tie

Macalester won for the eighth time in nine January games to move into a three-team tie for first place in the MIAC standings, beating Hamline 74-48 at the Leonard Center to improve to 11-5 overall and 11-2 in conference play. The Scots made good on eight of their 17 three-point shots, committed just six turnovers, and held the MIAC's top scoring team to a 30% shooting mark on the day.

Mac is tied with Concordia and Gustavus Adolphus on top of the league standings, one game ahead of fourth-place St. Benedict (10-3) in this hotly-contested race. All 11 Macalester conference wins have been by double figures and seven have been by blowouts of 18 points or more. The team's past six wins have been by 18 or more.

Ann Baltzer (Sr., Bismarck, N.D.) produced 24 points, six rebounds and three assists to lead Macalester, and Shannon Rene (So., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) was 5-for-9 behind the arc for 15 points while also providing six boards and a couple steals.

Danielle Johnson (Sr., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) added seven points and four assists. Posting eight points each were Jessica Rene (So., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) and Trina PaStarr (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest).

The game was hotly contested in the early going and was tied at 19-19 with 8:48 left on the first half clock. However, Mac put together a 16-4 run to take command at 35-23 with two minutes remaining in the period. Macalester opened the second half on a 14-2 rally to leave no doubt as the margin grew to 24 points at 54-30 with 13:42 to go. The lead hit 31 points with six minutes left.

Macalester led 22-2 in points off turnovers, 15-4 in second chance points, and 27-10 in bench scoring.

Hamline was paced by Nikki Klinck with 13 points, five boards and three assists. Jessica Englund scored 11 points and Mary Wilkowski contributed seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and two of the team's eight blocked shots. The Scots, however, held Wilkowski, the MIAC scoring leader, to just six points. Hamline drops to 7-8 overall and 5-8 in the MIAC.

The Scots return to action Wednesday (Jan. 27) when they play Bethel in Arden Hills.
