Defense lifts Scots past St. Thomas 60-41

Macalester vs. St. Thomas statistics

Macalester held St. Thomas to a 25% shooting figure on the day, including 18% in the second half, to cruise past the visiting Tommies 60-41 at the Leonard Center in the team's first game since Dec. 9. Trina PaStarr (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) scored 21 points and grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds to lead the way, while Danielle Johnson (Sr., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) and Ann Baltzer (Sr., Bismarck, N.D.) added nine points apiece.

The Scots remain tied for third in the MIAC standings at 4-1 (4-4 overall), while St. Thomas drops to 6-2 on the season and 3-2 in MIAC play.

St. Thomas went out on top 16-7 over the slow-starting Scots at the midway point of the first period. However, over the final 10 minutes of the opening half, Mac out-scored its guests 19-5 with tenacious play on the defensive end. Things didn't get any easier for UST in the second half as the Tommies shot just 6-for-34 from the field and failed to mount any sort of a comeback. The Scots opened the half on an 11-3 run to go up by 13. Mac's 15-minute run over the two halves was a dominant 30-8.

The two teams combined to go just 5-for-37 on three-point tries. Mac enjoyed a +5 turnover margin and out-scored UST 23-8 in points off turnovers.

In addition to getting 21 points and 17 boards from two-time All-MIAC forward PaStarr, as well as the nine points apiece from Baltzer and Johnson, the team received eight rebounds from Baltzer and seven from Johnson.

Eartha Bell(Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Breck School) picked up four steals and four assists and Johnson had three steals.

St. Thomas was led by Rachel Booth with 11 points and eight boards. Jordyn Sears picked up five steals.

The Scots travel to St. Peter on Monday (Jan. 4) to face MIAC co-leader Gustavus.
