Carleton keeps the Book of Knowledge

Macalester vs. Carleton statistics

Carleton held on to the "Book of Knowledge" traveling trophy by defeating the Scots 38-0 on a warm Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Knights improve to 2-1, while Macalester is now 1-3.

Jake McDonnell (Jr., Duluth, Minn. / Marshall) rushed for 138 for Macalester on 21 carries and Matt Mitchell (Jr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) caught five passes for 44 yards. McDonnell ran for 222 yards in last week's win over Maranatha. 

Josh Boomgaarden (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the defensive effort with 11 tackles. David Melms (Fy., Wauwatosa, Wis. Wisconsin Lutheran) added seven stops and Patrick Piepkorn (So., Sauk Rapids, Minn. / Sauk Rapids / Rice) had an interception and 35-yard return.

The Scots went 0-for-4 on red-zone scoring chances. They also had a punt blocked and had four turnovers, compared to just one for CC.

Vaughn Schmid was 18-for-25 passing for 273 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way for Carleton. The Knights gained 436 yards in total offense on the day. Schmid also added 69 yards rushing on nine carries. Jon Lien scored a pair of touchdowns for Carleton, rushing for 60 yards and one score and adding 45 yards and a TD in receptions. Anthony Kemper caught three passes for 115 yards and a score.

Carleton wrapped up its scoring when defensive lineman Caleb Hyde stripped the ball from a Macalester running back at the goal line and sprinted 99 yards for the touchdown.

Macalester plays next Saturday (Oct. 3) at Northwestern-Roseville.
