Campaign closes out with narrow loss as comeback bid falls short

Macalester vs. St. Catherine statistics

The College of St. Catherine knocked down half of its 20 three-point shots and went 18-for-23 from the free throw line to get past visiting Macalester 76-73 Saturday in the season-finale for both teams. Getting over a mid-season slump, the Scots close out the '08-09 winter campaign at 11-14 overall and 9-13 in the MIAC. They improved their overall record by two games from a season ago. St. Kate's finishes at 15-10 on the year and 12-10 in the MIAC, but just misses out on the six-team conference playoffs.

Macalester shot well itself and had six more baskets than the Wildcats. The Scots went 30-for-63 from the floor (48%) and had five three-pointers.

Danielle Johnson (Jr., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) and Ann Baltzer (Jr., Bismarck, N.D.) each had 17 points and four rebounds to lead the way for the Scots.  Johnson knocked down three from behind the arc.  Trina PaStarr (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) added 14 points and seven boards.

St. Catherine led 15-8 after five minutes of action, but the Scots tightened things up as the first half went along. However, the Wildcats ran off 10 points in a row to go up 41-28 late in the period. CSC knocked down eight three-pointers in the half and led 41-32 at the intermission.

The game appeared well in-hand for the home team as the lead swelled to 18 points at 60-42 with 11:22 to play. Macalester, though, responded with 12 quick unanswered points to suddenly cut the margin to six points with 8:43 left. Another Mac run reduced a nine-point CSC lead to three points at 67-64 with 3:04 to play. The Wildcats sealed things with a jumper at :24 to extend the advantage to five points.

Laura Kalbfell paced St. Kate's with 21 points. Brooke Hakanson added 15, while Molly Peterson and Jessica Arechigo scored 12 each. Peterson pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
