Leading by a couple points early in the second half, visiting Concordia went on an 11-0 run to open up a double digit lead, and held off a late Macalester charge to win 62-54 at the Leonard Center. The Cobbers held Macalester to a season-low 27% shooting figure on the night and went 6-for-14 on three pointers.
Concordia keeps a hold of second place in the MIAC standings and boosts its record to 7-3 (6-1 in the MIAC) with its fifth win in a row. Macalester is now 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the MIAC. Mac has just completed a very difficult portion of its schedule. The team's last four games have been against the top four teams in the current MIAC standings (St. Ben's, St. Thomas, Gustavus and Concordia).
Ann Baltzer (Jr., Bismarck, N.D.) went 4-for-6 from the field and finished with 13 points to pace Macalester.
Trina PaStarr (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) compiled her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Eight of PaStarr's rebounds came off the offensive glass.
Danielle Johnson (Jr., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) provided 10 points and
Eartha Bell (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Breck School) came up with five steals.
Concordia was paced by Jenna Freudenberg with 19 points, seven boards and three assists. Maggie Bauernfiend came off the bench and finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Macalester entered the game ranked sixth in the nation in fewest turnover committed per game, but Concordia's defense nearly doubled that average by forcing 28. Mac's defense responded by forcing 25 Cobber TO's.
The Scots return to action Saturday (Jan. 10) at Augsburg. After that, it's three straight home games on their new floor. Six of the next eight games following the tilt at Augsburg are at home.
