Macalester falls at St. Thomas 80-60

St. Thomas closed out the first half on a 12-1 run and picked up with a 15-5 rally over the first four minutes of the second period en route to an 80-60 win over the visiting Scots in Macalester's first game since Dec. 10. The Tommies jump to 7-2 on the season and 5-1 in the MIAC. The Scots are now 5-3 overall, 3-2 in league play.

St. Thomas went 7-for-16 on three-pointers and held the Scots to a 34% shooting performance. The Tommies had four players reach double figures in scoring.

The contest was closely played throughout most of the first half and featured six ties. The lead was never larger than four points throughout the first 17 minutes of play. With Macalester leading 26-25 with 6:03 left before the break, UST took the lead for good with 5:42 to go. St. Thomas led 37-27 at halftime.

Majra Mucic (So., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Trina PaStarr (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) netted 14 points apiece to lead the Scots. Mucic came off the bench to go 5-for-7 from the floor while also grabbing five boards. PaStarr led the team with eight rebounds, while Danielle Johnson (Jr., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) matched a season high with seven assists.

Macalester owned a 34-13 margin in bench points. In addition to getting 14 from Mucic, the Scots received nine points from Holly Schiedermayer (Fy., Waupaca, Wis.) and eight from Maggie Wood (Fy., Madison, Wis. / Edgewood).  Wood went 2-for-2 on three-pointers and also collected three steals.

Jessica Katch paced UST with 20 points to go along with eight assists and eight rebounds. Becky Thiesen added 17 points, while Sarah Smith had 12 points and 11 boards.  Kassie Robinson had 14 points and four blocked shots.

The Scots face another highly-regarded MIAC team Monday (Jan. 5) when they host conference co-leader Gustavus at 7:30 p.m.
