Post-season hopes dashed by late Hamline rally

Macalester and Hamline met in the regular-season finale at the University of St. Thomas, with the sixth and final MIAC post-season berth on the line, and it was the Hamline Pipers pulling away for a 63-48 victory.

Hamline goes to 13-12 overall and 10-12 in the MIAC, and will play an MIAC quarter-final game Monday (Feb. 25) at Gustavus. The Scots close out their season at 9-16 overall and 8-14 in the MIAC.

The Pipers went out on top 25-16 with 6:43 left in the opening period before a late Mac run made the score 30-29 in favor of HU at halftime. The game was closely contested in the second half before the Pipers turned a five point lead at 47-42 with 5:53 to play into a decisive victory by out-scoring Macalester 16-6 the rest of the way. Hamline held Macalester to a 29% shooting figure on the night.

Majra Mucic (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.) came off the bench to pace Macalester with 13 points and Trina PaStarr (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) added 12. Mucic sank three three-pointers. Eartha Bell (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Breck) finished with 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals with one of her top games of the year.

Mary Wilkowski led a well-balanced Piper attack with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Rochelle Sather and Britta Schwartzhoff added 13 points apiece.
