Macalester tips Bethel by one on late Baltzer Basket

In a game which was close from start to finish, Macalester scored on an Ann Baltzer (So., Bismarck, N.D.) basket with less than 20 seconds to play to edge Bethel 70-69 in Arden Hills. The contest featured 10 lead changes and eight ties and the biggest lead of the night was seven points. Statistically, the game was close in nearly every category.

After being held to less than 50 in their previous two games, both defeats, the Scots had two players with 20 points and reached the 70-point plateau for the fourth time this season. Macalester improves to 5-7 overall and 4-5 in MIAC competition. The Bethel Royals drop to 6-6 on the year, 3-6 in the MIAC.

Baltzer turned in her fifth double-double of the season, in addition to scoring the game-winning basket, and finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Eight of her boards came off the offensive glass. Trina PaStarr (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) went 11-for-19 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range, for 24 points – her second-best career total.

Eartha Bell (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Breck) collected six steals to keep her hold on the MIAC steals leadership and added three assists, while Danielle Johnson (So., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) gave out four assists. Johnson and Alyssa Lunde (So., Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) each scored eight points.

The Royals were led by Annegret Nautsch with 16 points and 11 boards, and Shari Laugen with 14 points, five assists and three steals.

The Scots will look to get to the .500 level in the league when they host Carleton on Saturday (Jan. 19) at the College of St. Catherine at 1 p.m.
