Scots go 1-3 at season-opening Labor Day Classic

Macalester went 1-3 over the weekend at the Northwestern College Labor Day Classic in Roseville and Arden Hills. Friday's matches were played at Northwestern College and Saturday's matches were at Bethel University.

Macalester's lone win was in Friday's nightcap, a 30-22, 30-21 and 30-15 decision over North Central College. The Scots lost to Northwestern 3-1, Bethel 3-0 and in the fifth-place match fell to St. Olaf 3-2. The defeat to the Oles was a heartbreaker. After dropping games one and two, Mac bounced back with 30-18 and 30-9 blowouts only to lose the decisive fifth game 15-11.

Kari Tanaka (Sr., Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) handed out 5.1 assists per game and also averaged 1.5 kills and 2.3 digs per game to lead the way for the Scots. Tanaka led Mac with eight serving aces. She was selected to the all-tournament team.

The team's top hitter over the weekend was Kate Fahje (Sr., Waukesha, Wis. / South) with 2.5 kills per game to go along with a team-leading 15 blocks. Kiera Coulter (Fy., Davis, Calif.) led the defensive effort with 3.5 digs per game, while Marie Godwin (So., Chaska., Minn.) contributed 2.7 digs per game. Suzy Szumowski (Jr., Northbrook, Ill. / Glenbrook North) averaged 1.9 kills and 0.6 blocks per game.

The Scots play four more matches next weekend (Sept. 7-8) at the Augsburg Invitational in Minneapolis.
