Baltzer, Johnson lead Scots past St. Thomas 74-68; comeback effort finishes on a 16-2 run

Down by eight points with less than six minutes to play, Macalester out-scored St. Thomas 16-2 the rest of the way to earn a 74-68 win at the College of St. Catherine as the Scots toppled the Tommies for just the second time in the last 31 meetings between these to Summit Ave. rivals.

Macalester improves to 3-3 on the season and 2-2 in the MIAC. St. Thomas drops to 3-2 on the year, 2-1 in the conference.

The Tommies led 34-28 at halftime, but Mac shot 50% in the second half while holding their guests to a 31% second half shooting performance.

Ann Baltzer (So., Bismarck, N.D.) scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double in 17 career games, and Danielle Johnson (So., DeForest, Wis. / Madison, Wis. / Edgewood) also had a strong all-around game, contributing 18 points, a career-high eight assists, and four steals. That is the most assists since Callie PaStarr dished out eight in the second game of last season. Baltzer netted 17 of her 27 points in the decisive second half.

Baltzer and Johnson were joined in double figures by Trina PaStarr (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest), who added 10 points while grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds. Alyssa Lund (So., Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) had nine points and six boards.

Jessica Katch paced UST with 20 points. Carrie Embree provided 13 points and eight rebounds, and Chelsea Wirtz finished with 11 points and four steals.

After going just 4-for-10 from the free throw line and shooting 36% in the first half, Macalester was 18-for-24 on foul shots and 50% from the floor in the second period. Baltzer had 17 points and eight rebounds in the decisive second half.

Mac out-scored the Tommies 36-34 in points in the paint.

Following Mac's win over the Tommies, the Macalester men defeated UST 72-70 on the back end of the double-header. This is the first time ever that Macalester has defeated St. Thomas in both women's and men's basketball on the same day.

The Scots are off until a Dec. 13 non-conference tilt at Wisconsin-River Falls . They return to MIAC competition Jan. 3 at Concordia.
