PaStarr scores 27; Scots topple Austin College

Macalester vs. Austin stats & play-by-play

Less than 24 hours after dropping a two-point heart-breaker to the University of Dallas , the Macalester Scots bounced back with an impressive 79-70 win over Austin College in the Bob Mason Classic in Sherman, Texas. This is a major win for the young Scots. Austin went 13-8 last year and knocked off DePauw ( Ind. ) in its season-final. DePauw went on to win the NCAA Division III championship.

Trina PaStarr (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) pumped in 27 points, going 16-for-20 from the free throw line, and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the way. The Scots shot 61% in the first half to open up a 40-29 halftime advantage and held off the Kangaroos throughout the second half, never giving up its lead. PaStarr is off to a great start this season, having produced 19 points and 13 rebounds the day before against Dallas.

PaStarr's 16 made free throws and 20 free throw attempts are both school records.

Mac netted 80 points in an overtime win last year over Augsburg, but this is the most points scored by the Scots in regulation since an 83-76 win over St. Catherine in February 2001.

The Scots got off to a quick start against the hosts, going up 14-4 and then extending the advantage to 16 points at 28-12 with nine minutes to go in the first half. Mac went 14-for-23 from the field in the period and 10-for-12 from the foul line. Austin canned five of its eight three-pointers in the second half as the final 20 minutes was close throughout. A key 13-4 Macalester run starting with 8:09 to play extended the team's margin to 11 points at 68-57 with 3:01 to play.

Three players joined PaStarr in double figures. Danielle Johnson (So., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) went 5-for-7 from the floor, including 3-of-5 on three's, and finished with 15 points. Alyssa Lunde (So., Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) contributed 12 points and Majra Mucic (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.) came off the bench to score 10 on a 5-for-7 shooting day.

Eartha Bell (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Breck) contributed six assists and three steals and over the two games in Texas led the squad with nine assists and nine steals.

Macalester shot 53% on the afternoon and went 24-for-32 (75%) from the free throw stripe. This is the first time the Scots have shot over 50% since January 2003 against Gustavus.

Maegan Fitzgerald scored 27 points to pace the Kangaroos and Katy Williams added 20.

The Scots are off until Nov. 28 when they open MIAC play at Gustavus Adolphus.
