Macalester ends season on high note

Carson Gorecki (Jr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored on a breakaway off a nice assist from Daniel Balogh (So., St. Paul, Minn. / Highland Park) midway through the second overtime period as Macalester wrapped up its season on a winning note, beating Augsburg 2-1 Saturday night in St. Paul. The Scots wrap up the season at 8-6-4 overall and tied for fifth at 5-4-1 in the MIAC. They missed out on an MIAC playoff berth by just a single point. Augsburg closes out at 9-9 overall, 5-5 in league play.

This is the third time Gorecki has scored game-winning goals in overtime, as he also netted Golden Goals last year against Ripon and St. Mary's. He finishes the season with nine goals and three assists, nearly identical to his nine-goal, four-assist season as a sophomore.

Balogh, who set up Gorecki's game-winner, was playing in his first varsity game of the season and second in his career after checking in late in the second half.

Augsburg took the lead at 59:59 on an Alex Hildebrandt header. Macalester, however, tied things up with an “own goal” at 68:03 to force the match into overtime.

The Auggies out-shot Mac 14-11. Macalester goalkeeper Ryan Palmer (Sr., Helena, Mont. / Capital) made six saves in his final game in net.
