Geiger, Gutierrez score in 2-1 win over Gustavus

Grace Geiger (So., Seattle, Wash. / Bishop Blanchet) and Lauren Gutierrez (Fy., Hickory, N.C. / St. Stephen's) scored goals and Macalester hung on for a 2-1 home field win over Gustavus. The Scots are now 10-5-1 overall and finish MIAC regular-season play at 7-3-1. If Carleton wins its final two games this weekend, the season is over for Macalester. If Carleton ties or loses a game, the Scots will make it into next weeks' four-team MIAC playoffs.

Gustavus scored on its only shot on goal, but Macalester out-shot its guests by a 20-2 margin. The Scots had eight shots on goal, compared to one for G.A. and enjoyed a 7-1 corner kick advantage.

Geiger opened the scoring with her first goal of the season just four minutes before halftime on a Grace King (Jr., Northampton, Mass.) assist. Gutierrez then tallied her second goal of the year at 56:38 to increase the margin to 2-0. Meghan Garrity (Sr., Walled Lake, Mich. / Marian) provided her team-leading fifth assist on the Gutierrez goal.

If the season is to continue. Carleton must either loss to or tie against either St. Catherine or St. Olaf this weekend. Concordia, St. Benedict and Augsburg are already in.

Macalester survives yet another season without losing on its home pitch to an MIAC opponent the the unbeaten streak is now 80 games. Since 1993, the Scots are now an incredible 72-0-8 at home against conference foes (either regular- or post-season) at Macalester Stadium.

SCHEDULE NOTE - Macalester's trip to Los Angeles this weekend to play Claremont-Mudd Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer has been cancelled due to the severe fires in southern California. Safety and health concerns are the primary reasons. Also, Mac's two opponents are being forced to re-schedule conference matches and making up those matches will take top priority.
