Carson Gorecki (Jr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored on an assist from
Eric Tettegah (Fy., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Breck School) in the 74th minute to give Macalester a 1-1 double overtime tie with visiting St. Thomas on a wet evening at Macalester Stadium. The Scots keep their MIAC post-season hopes alive and go to 7-5-4 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference. The Tommies go to 10-3-3 on the year, 5-0-3 in MIAC play.
St. Thomas led most of the match after scoring an "own goal" off a corner kick at 22:59. A second half red card (for getting two yellow cards) put the Tommies down a player for the final 20 minutes of regulation and for all of overtime. Less than five minutes after UST started playing short-handed, the Scots scored on a nice pass from Tettegah to Gorecki.
For Gorecki, it was his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Ryan Palmer (Sr., Helena, Mont. / Capital) saved the game with a great save late in the second half. [view the save]
St. Thomas out-shot Mac 15-7 and had a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal and 10-6 margin in corner kicks. The game was a little physical, with seven yellow cards being handed out in addition to the red card. There were 53 fouls called in the match.
Macalester faces a major challenge when it travels to St. Peter next Tuesday (Oct. 23) to take on Gustavus Adolphus.
