Macalester rallied back from a two-game deficit to force a decisive fifth game, only to lose a 3-2 heart-breaker at Wisconsin-River Falls. The host-Falcons claimed games one and two by 30-23 and 30-24 scores to put Macalester in an early hole. The Scots then battled back to win the next two games by identical 30-22 tallies before UWRF responded with a 15-7 triumph in the final game.
The Scots drop to 3-17 on the season. Wisconsin-River Falls improves to 6-22.
Macalester hit .154 as a team, compared to .112 for UWRF. Majra Mucic (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.) had nine blocks and Kari Tanaka (Sr., Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) had 26 assists and 14 digs to lead the way. Erin Cusac (So., Pine River , Minn. / Pine River-Backus) was the team's top hitter with 12 kills and also led Mac with 19 digs.
Suzy Szumowski (Jr., Northbrook, Ill. / Glenbrook North) spiked nine kills and Kate Fahje (Sr., Waukesha, Wis. / South) added eight. Kiera Coulter (Fy., Davis, Calif.) contributed 17 digs and Marie Godwin (So., Chaska, Minn.) had 16. The Scots served seven aces, including three by Fahje.
Macalester plays a pair of MIAC matches this weekend. The Scots take on No. 10-ranked St. Thomas Friday night (Oct. 18) at UST
and play the next afternoon at St. Olaf.
