Blazers pull out game one win; Sweep Scots in St. Joseph

The upset-minded Scots gave St. Benedict a fight in the first game, serving for the win, but the Blazers pulled out a 31-29 win and went on to sweep Macalester 3-0 in St. Joseph. The Blazers won the second and third games by 30-24 and 30-20 tallies and remain in a crowded five-team battle for the top spot in the MIAC standings. They are now 16-5 overall and 6-1 in the league. Macalester goes to 3-15 overall, 0-7 in MIAC competition.

The Scots were led defensively by Kiera Coulter (Fy., Davis, Calif.) with 19 digs and Kari Tanaka (Sr., Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) with 13 digs to go along with 20 set assists.

Erin Cusac (So., Pine River, Minn. / Pine River-Backus) led the attack with 10 kills. Suzy Szumowski (Jr., Northbrook, Ill. / Glenbrook North) contributed six kills and five blocks, while Kate Fahje (Sr., Waukesha, Wis. / South) added six kills and three aces.

Emma Jaynes had 10 kills and 13 digs to lead the way for the Blazers, while Beth Hanson set 32 assists.

Mac is off until a non-conference match next Tuesday (Oct. 16) at Wisconsin-River Falls .
