Steve Murray was named an Assistant Director of Athletics at Macalester in May of 2017 and was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in August of 2019. Murray handles NCAA compliance for Macalester’s 21 intercollegiate athletic programs as well as internal operations and physical education.
For nine years, Murray was the head strength and conditioning coach, as well as the director of the Deno Fitness Center, at Macalester. He was responsible for the athletic development of the varsity athletic programs, designing and implementing the strength, speed, agility and quickness programs for all varsity athletes. Prior to coming to Macalester, Murray also worked in strength and conditioning at three other Division III institutions – Hamline University in St. Paul, Marietta College in Ohio, and Augsburg College in Minneapolis. He has also worked with the football programs at UW-Eau Claire and St. Olaf College.
Murray attended the University of Minnesota, where he played football, and graduated with a degree in sports management with a minor in business. He also earned his Master of Education in Applied Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota and a Master in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He has been certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association since 2006.
