Jim Smith ‘21 became an assistant coach for the Macalester men’s and women’s golf teams in the fall of 2021. In his first two seasons, Smith coached historic Macalester golf teams alongside head coach Johnny Greene, as the men’s team broke 18-hole, 36-hole, and 54-hole program records. Similarly, the women’s team shot its 18-hole, 36-hole, and 54-hole records with individual record-setting in each as well. In the 2022-2023 season, both squads recorded their best conference finish in 15 years.
A 2021 Macalester graduate, Smith played four years of golf for the Scots, and double-majored in Geography and Economics. During the week, he works for Optum as a business consultant, working with health plans around the country to enhance provider networks and data management practices.
“I am so fulfilled by my continued connection with Macalester Athletics and this college community,” Smith said. “Recruiting wonderful people and high-quality athletes, and then helping them reach their potential as golfers, as students, and as teammates is incredibly gratifying work. I am so excited by the fast, upward trajectory of Mac Golf.”
Smith is a native of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.
