Josh Roy joined the Macalester staff as an assistant men’s soccer coach in January 2017. Roy comes to Macalester after spending three seasons as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team at Gustavus Adolphus.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Macalester men’s soccer program and head coach Gregg Olson,” Roy said. “Both on the field and off, the members of the program have proven to be dedicated to success. I am very excited to play a role in the future of this program.”
While at Gustavus, Roy trained and managed the Gusties’ reserve team, coordinated recruiting and provided administrative support for the program. His efforts contributed to the recruitment of 40 student-athletes to Gustavus over the last two seasons. On the field, the Gusties were 32-19-5 over the past three seasons, including a 15-9-5 mark in the MIAC. The 2014 squad won the MIAC playoffs and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Prior to his time at Gustavus, Roy worked for the Edina Soccer Club and the Eden Prairie Soccer Club in various coaching and administrative roles. In 2014, he coached Edina Soccer Club’s U17 and U18 boys’ teams to state tournament and state cup appearances. Additionally, Roy was the girls’ assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at Eden Prairie High School in 2012-13.
A native of Mankato, Minn., Roy graduated from Gustavus in 2007 with a degree in sociology/anthropology. He was a member of the Gusties’ soccer teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times and won three MIAC playoff championships during his four years. The 2005 team advanced to the NCAA Division III championship game.
Roy also has a Master’s degree in sport and recreation management from Concordia University-St. Paul. He currently holds a USSF ‘B’ license and a NSCAA Goalkeeper Level 1 & 2 diploma.
“Josh is a welcome addition to the program,” Olson said. “He brings great insight about the MIAC and his knowledge and work rate with recruiting is second to none.”
