Ian Barker

The 2011 season marks Ian Barker’s 21st year of intercollegiate coaching, his 13th at Macalester, and his ninth year as Macalester head coach.

During the eight seasons Barker served as the top assistant at the University of Wisconsin, the Badgers went 111-38-20 and won one Big Ten championship while making four NCAA appearances. In 1995 the Badgers were 20-4-1 and won the NCAA Division I national championship in front of the biggest crowd for soccer in NCAA history. In winning the title, the Badgers recorded a shutout in all five rounds of post season action, including the final game victory over Duke University. During his time at Wisconsin, Barker coached four players who went on to careers in the then fledgling MLS and four All-Americans.

While 2008 was the first year Barker coached at Macalester full-time, he had worked alongside Coach John Leaney since the 1999 season. During this period the Macalester men have gone 85-24-11 in MIAC play and 142-67-23 overall. Over these 12 seasons the Scots have won six MIAC regular season championships, one MIAC playoff title, and been to the NCAA playoffs six times, including the quarter finals in 2002. Barker has coached five All-Americans at Macalester and two conference players of the year. As Macalester head coach, his teams won three conference championships.

Prior to coming to Macalester full-time, Barker served as the State Director of Coaching and Player Development for the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association, serving 80,000 constituents in 140 clubs throughout Minnesota.

Barker serves as an instructor in both the coaching education programs of the United States Soccer Federation and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He himself holds a USSF A License, NSCAA Premier and Master Coaching Diploma and an English FA coaching badge.

Currently serving as the Assistant Head Coach of the US Youth Soccer Region II ODP Barker travels extensively with young American players of the highest caliber. Through ODP as a coach he has competed with teams in Brazil, Costa Rica, England, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Among the teams Coach Barker has coached in competition with are the youth national teams of France, Spain, Andorra, Japan, Holland, Jamaica and Canada as well as the youth club sides of Juventus, Gothenburg, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Glasgow Rangers, Glasgow Celtic and Galatasaray.

Barker played collegiately for the University of Warwick in Coventry in the UK. In the U.S. he played for two amateur teams, Madison United and Madison 56ers. As a player for the Madison 56ers Barker was on the side that won the US Amateur National Championship in 1992. He continues to play recreationally in the Minnesota state leagues.

Educated at the University of Warwick Barker received a 2:1 degree in Philosophy and Literature and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education.

Coach Barker is married to Tess Surprenant, who works at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management.  They live in Minneapolis.
