Wade Smethers joined the Macalester football coaching staff in the spring of 2026 as the receivers coach. Smethers came to St. Paul after serving as the quarterbacks coach at Wayzata High School during the 2025 season
Prior to coaching at Wayzata, Smethers spent five seasons at Mayville (N.D.) State University as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and tight ends coach. He also was the associate head coach of the Comets from 2023-25. Smethers’ offenses broke nine school records while helping the team improve each season in the wins column. During his time at Mayville State, he also served as the equipment manager for the athletics department and was a student life specialist.
Before Mayville State, Smethers was the wide receivers coach for UW-Stout for three years and the co-special teams coordinator, wide receivers coach and running backs coach over four years at UW-River Falls, his alma mater.
Smethers was a quarterback and tight end at UW-River Falls, graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise and sport science.
