Steve Murray is entering his ninth year as the director of the Deno Fitness Center and the head strength and conditioning coach for Macalester's 21 intercollegiate sports.

His duties include managing the Deno Fitness Center, supervising and teaching proper techniques for training on all equipment, supervising student workers, providing all members with guidance and help on achieving their fitness goals, and working with WHAM (Wellness & Health at Macalester) on campus-wide health and wellness initiatives. Murray is also responsible for athletic development of the varsity athletic teams. He designs and implements the strength, speed, agility and quickness programs for all varsity athletes. Murray works with the athletic trainers to provide workouts for athletes rehabilitating injuries.

Murray attended the University of Minnesota, where he played football, and graduated with a degree in sports management with a minor in business. He also earned his Masters of Education in Applied Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He has been certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association since 2006.

Murray has significant experience in the health, wellness and personal training field. He has also worked in strength and conditioning at three other Division III institutions – Hamline University in St. Paul, Marietta College in Ohio, and Augsburg College in Minneapolis. He has also worked with the football programs at UW-Eau Claire and St. Olaf College.

Murray has done personal training for LifeTime Fitness, Adaptive Health Solutions, and was the owner of Elite Fitness LLC, which provided in-home personal training. He has also spent time working with high school athletes at Holy Angels Academy in Richfield, and Hartman Strength & Conditioning in St. Paul.

Murray and his wife, Katie, are the parents of four children; Emma, 7, Wilson, 5, Carter, 3, and Jackson, eight months.
