Macalester College has named Dave Hamlin as the new offensive line coach for the Scots. Hamlin is entering his 20th year of coaching, having spent the last 19 at the high school level. Hamlin left his post as head football coach at Zimmerman High School to join the Macalester football coaching staff.
"I am very happy to add Coach Hamlin to our coaching staff," said head football coach Tony Jennison. "I got to know and respect Dave during my recruiting trips to Zimmerman High School. What always stood out to me was his concern for the well being of his student-athletes. He was consistently a very positive advocate for the young men in his program. I know he will do a great job in helping lead our offense and football program. We are ecstatic to have such a fine man and experienced coach."
"I am looking forward to beginning my college football coaching career,” said Coach Hamlin. "After 19 years in the high school coaching ranks my family and I felt it was time for a new challenge. With the new facilities and new leadership I am confident the Mac football program is ready to take the next step. I am excited to be a part of what is going on at Macalester College.”
Hamlin was named head football coach at Zimmerman in 2003 when the school opened and started its football program. In just three years under Hamlin’s guidance Zimmerman played for the Rum River Conference championship and finished with the school’s first winning season while averaging nearly 400 yards per game rushing.
Hamlin, originally, from South St. Paul, played on the offensive line at St. John's for legendary coach John Gagliardi in the early 1980’s. Hamlin began his coaching career at St. John’s Prep and had stops at Shakopee, Holy Angels, and Elk River. Hamlin was an Elk River assistant for five years before becoming the first head coach at nearby Zimmerman HS.
Hamlin and wife Sarah have three children: Samantha (15), Emma (8), and Cody (7).
