Blaine Kunze enters his eighth season as an assistant coach at Macalester. For the second straight year he will serve as quarterbacks coach after coaching the defensive backs for the previous six seasons. Kunze played at Mac in the mid 1980’s, helping the Scots to winning seasons in each of his four years.
“Coach Kunze has a great passion for teaching college athletes how to win, not just at football but how to win at life,” says head coach Tony Jennison. “Because of that, he has been a tremendous fit here with our football program and what we are building at Macalester.”
Kunze went to Austin High School in southern Minnesota, where he was a standout athlete, and graduated from Mac in 1986 with a double major in Speech Communications and Law and Society. While at Mac Kunze was a two sport athlete for the Scots, playing football and baseball. In football, Kunze received team MVP honors in 1984 and was a three-time All-MIAC selection, two-time captain and honorable mention All-American his senior year. Kunze started 41 straight games for Macalester and his 1986 defensive team set and still holds an all NCAA Record of 59 takeaways in a season.
In 2014, Kunze was inducted into the Macalester Athletics Hall of Fame.
Kunze has three children: Roman, Noah and Gabriella. According to Kunze, “My kids have taught me to continue to teach a concept of 'living without fear' to reach your highest altitude, not just in football but also in life."
