ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against St. Catherine University, losing the opener 13-3 and winning the finale 7-3, at the Macalester College Softball Complex. The Scots moved to 20-13 overall and 11-4 in conference. The Wildcats are now 21-12 overall and 10-5 in conference.
In the opening game, the Wildcats got out to an early 1-0 lead, jumping on the Scots with a pair of doubles in the first inning. The Wildcats played add on with a two-run home run in the third inning, and got one more in the fourth, taking a 4-0 lead. But the Scots put two on in the bottom half, and sophomore
Dylan Tapia (Tarzana, Calif./Notre Dame) drove in sophomore
Safiya Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) with a two out single to make it 4-1 headed to the fifth.
After a scoreless away half,
Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) led off with a single, junior
Callia Holland (Akron, Ohio/Hawken) reached on an error and Butler singled to left. The bases were loaded with two outs for junior
Martha Miller (Medford, Wis./Medford), who came through with an RBI single: 4-3.
The Wildcats weren't done hitting: Alexa Carlstrom, the starting pitcher, blasted a three-run homer to left in the top of the sixth to make it 7-3. The barrage continued. St. Kate's added six more in the top of the final inning to make it 13-3 and put the game out of reach.
Miller started for the Scots, allowing three runs, all earned, with one walk and one strikeout over three innings pitched. Bojorquez came in to start the fourth and also threw three innings, allowing four runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Senior
Kara Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and junior
Paige Schultz (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) each pitched in the seventh inning.
In the nightcap, the Scots came out hot. Despite giving up one run in the top of the inning, the bats came out blazing with four runs in the bottom half. A huge double from sophomore
Ally Wolf (Valencia, Calif./Valencia) scored the first two, and a sacrifice fly from Holland made it 3-1. Junior
Rebecca Heinze (Rosemount, Minn./Prescott) tacked on an RBI single to give the Scots a 4-1 lead headed to the second. The Scots added two more in the second, one on an error and a second on a single by junior
Elizabeth Welch (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North). The bats then went quiet until the sixth and let Miller go to work on the mound, as she didn't allow the Wildcats an earned run until the sixth inning, when they cut the lead to 6-3. Tapia added some insurance in the home half though, making it 7-3 with a lasered double to the gap.
Miller threw a complete game in Game 2, allowing three runs (one earned), five hits and getting four strikeouts. She was the winning pitcher.
The Scots host Carleton tomorrow at the Macalester College Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
