ST. PAUL, Minn. – A two-out, bases-loaded single by senior infielder
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) gave the Macalester College baseball team a 2-1 victory over the University of Northwestern in a non-conference game Monday afternoon at Nicholson Field. The walk-off win improves the Scots to 18-10 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 11-14.
Macalester struggled to generate offense against Northwestern starter Christian Raya, who limited the Scots to no runs on four hits over the first eight innings. In the bottom of the second, Gumagay came up with the bases loaded and two out but struck out to strand the runners. The Eagles weren't having much success hitting Macalester pitching, which sent seven pitchers to the mound over the first seven innings. An unearned run by Northwestern in the top of the third was all either team could muster until the bottom of the ninth.
First year outfielder
John McMurray (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends) led off the ninth with a double, then advanced to third on a flyball from senior
Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton). Sophomore
Connor Davison (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside) came through with a single to plate McMurray with the tying run. The hit sent Raya out of the game in favor of Luke O'Rourke, who gave up a single to senior
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) that put runners on first and third with one out. After first year
Ellis Alexander (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) walked to load the bases, O'Rourke induced a lineout to bring up Gumagay with two down and the bases full. This time Gumagay delivered, lifting a single into right field to bring home pinch runner
Jax Minnis (Gilbert, Ariz./Seton Catholic Prep) with the game-winning run.
Planko led the offense, going 3-for-4 with three singles. Junior catcher
Ben Oberdorfer (Jacksonville, Fla./Paxon School) started behind the plate and hit a double in the second inning. First year lefty
Ben Beauvais (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit) was the only Macalester pitcher to pitch two innings, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out two. Junior righthander
Nick Strezo (San Mateo, Calif./Hillsdale) pitched the ninth to earn the win, giving up one hit and fanning one.
The Scots return to MIAC play with a conference doubleheader against Saint Mary's University on Wednesday, April 15. The first game starts at 2:30 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
