MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – With a 4-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Minn. Morris, Macalester College head baseball coach
Matt Parrington reached 400 career wins Wednesday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Scots, who lost the second game, 5-3, are now 4-4 overall on the season, while the Cougars are 3-1.
Parrington, who is in his 27th season as head coach, is the program's winningest coach with a record of 400-525-2.
Macalester had to come from behind to earn the milestone victory for its coach, as Minn. Morris scored a run in the top of the third inning. With the score still 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth of the seven-inning game, the Scots broke through. First year outfielder
John McMurray (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends) drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a bunt by sophomore outfielder
Tristan Lander (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) and went to third on a single by senior outfielder
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). Senior infielder
Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) followed with a grounder to third that allowed McMurray to score the tying run. With two outs, junior infielder
Isaiah Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Northbrook) belted a double to left that plated Alexander with the go-ahead run. Still in the sixth, senior catcher
Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) singled to score Ramirez and Jones for a 4-1 lead.
Senior pitcher
Jamie Loizeaux (Albany, Calif./Albany) pitched a perfect seventh inning for the save in relief of senior
Ben King (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet), who had a solid outing. King pitched six innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out six and walking three for his first win of the season. Lander was 2-for-2 with a single and a double at the plate.
In the second game, the Cougars scored runs in the first and third innings for a 2-0 lead. Paulsen singled home senior outfielder
Brennan Murley (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) in the top of the fifth to cut the lead in half. After Minn. Morris pushed another run across in the bottom of the fifth, McMurray plated senior outfielder
Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs), then scored on a double by Alexander to tie the game at 3-3. But the Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and retired the Scots in the top of the seventh to win 5-3 and earn a split of the doubleheader. McMurray went 2-for-3 with a run and a run batted in to lead the offense.
Macalester heads to Central Florida to play in the RussMatt Invitational Mar. 14-21. The Scots open against Dominican University on Mar. 14 at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Fla.
