ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team went on the road and racked up 11 runs on 13 hits to beat the University of Northwestern, 11-1 in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Field. The game served as the final tune-up before MIAC play for the Scots, who improve to 10-7 on the season. The Eagles drop to 5-9.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth. Senior infielder
Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) singled to score senior infielder
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville), and senior outfielder
Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) hit a two-run double to bring home Jones and senior designated hitter
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, MD./Walt Whitman) for a 3-0 lead. In the top of the fifth, Jones roped a two-run double down the left field line to plate Planko and sophomore outfielder
Tristan Lander (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson). Macalester loaded the bases later in the inning, and McCaskey and junior infielder
Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) were hit by pitches, making the score 7-0 Scots.
Macalester pushed three more runs across in the seventh, with Peacock and Lander delivering RBI singles and Planko doubling home Peacock for a 10-0 advantage. Northwestern tallied its lone run in the bottom of the seventh, only to have Peacock single to score senior infielder
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) for an 11-1 lead.
While the Scots' bats were on fire, the pitching kept the Eagles at bay. Junior
Nick Strezo (San Mateo, Calif./Hillsdale) started and pitched three shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out two. Sophomore
Haruto Mizuno (Irving, Texas/Ranchview), junior
Jack Nussbaum (Brunswick, Maine/Thornton Academy) and seniors
Jamie Loizeaux (Albany, Calif./Albany) and
Tristan Collins (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) each pitched a scoreless and hitless inning of relief, with Nussbaum fanning all three batters he faced. Mizuno was the pitcher of record when the Scots scored the game-winning run to earn his first collegiate victory.
Peacock finished the game 3-for-4 with a run and three runs batted in. McCaskey and Jones each drove in three runs on two hits, with Jones scoring two runs. Lander and Planko also had two hits apiece. The Scots also drew 10 walks in the win, led by Gumagay with four.
Macalester begins MIAC play on Saturday, March 28 with a home doubleheader against St. Olaf. The Scots will honor head coach
Matt Parrington for achieving 400 career wins earlier this season prior to the start of the first game, which begins at 1:00 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
