Baseball: Bats Stay Hot in Florida as Scots Beat Ripon, 11-1

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Macalester College baseball team tallied 11 runs on 10 hits while giving up just five hits and a run to defeat Ripon College, 11-1 at the RussMatt Central Florida Tournament Sunday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park. The win gives the Scots a 6-4 record overall and a 2-0 mark in Florida, while the Redhawks drop to 1-8.

Sophomore designated hitter Connor Davison (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside) put the Scots on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with a single that brought home junior infielder Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) for the game's first run. Then in the third, a ball hit by Davison was mishandled by the centerfielder, allowing Peacock to score. Ripon pushed a run across in the top of the fourth to make the score 2-1 Macalester.

The game changed in favor of the Scots in the bottom of the fourth, as Macalester scored three runs, all with two outs, for a 5-1 advantage. After a flyout and a strikeout to start the inning, sophomore catcher Bobby Munoz (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) doubled then scored on a single by senior infielder Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy). Peacock followed with a single to plate Jones, then later coming home on an error.

Then in the fifth, the Scots put the game out of reach with six runs. Munoz hit a two-run double that drove in senior Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and first year J.C. Whitelock (St. Petersburg, Fla./Principia), Jones doubled home Munoz, senior outfielder Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) tripled to score Jones and Peacock, and Davison drove in McCaskey with a grounder. The game ended after the top of the seventh with the Scots leading 11-1.

Munoz finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, two runs and two runs batted in. Jones also was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Peacock scored four runs and had a hit, an RBI and two walks.

The pitching also was superb, with junior Caleb Chou-Green (San Francisco, Calif./Peddie School) limiting Ripon to one run on four hits while striking out one and walking none in five innings of work. Sophomore Elliott Rowley (South Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic School) and Jones each pitched one scoreless inning to close out the win.

Macalester faces Vassar College on Monday, March 16 at the RussMatt Tournament. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. Eastern at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla.
