ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team split a pair of games at the Rochester Dome, beating Buena Vista, 10-4 in the first game before falling in eight innings to Luther, 5-4. The Scots will head to Florida next weekend with a record of 2-4 on the season.
In the win over Buena Vista, Macalester got on the scoreboard in the top of the first when sophomore catcher
Dylan Tapia (Tarzana, Calif./Notre Dame) doubled home sophomore outfielder
Safiya Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) for a 1-0 lead. Junior outfielder
Callia Holland (Akron, Ohio/Hawken) made it 2-0 with a solo home run in the top of the second. Buena Vista tied the score with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second, but the Scots regained the lead in the top of the fourth on a single by junior
Martha Miller (Medford, Wis./Medford) that plated junior infielder
Alli Johnson (Waukee, Iowa/Northwest).
In the top of the fifth, Tapia blasted a two-run homer with junior infielder
Elizabeth Welch (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) on base for a 5-2 advantage. After the Beavers scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, Miller followed with a two-run home run to put Macalester on top, 7-3. Junior
Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) became the fourth Scot to homer in the game with a solo shot in the seventh. Later in the inning, Miller doubled home senior
Kara Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and scored on a double by sophomore infielder
Ally Wolf (Valencia, Calif./Valencia) for a 10-3 lead. Buena Vista tallied one run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 10-4.
Miller went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and four runs batted in at the plate. She also started in the circle and allowed two unearned runs on two hits while fanning five and walking two in four innings to earn the win. Tapia also was 3-for-3 with a double, a homer and three RBIs, while Butler and Wolf each had a pair of hits.
Against Luther, Bojorquez singled to score Butler in the second inning and Welch homered in the third for a 2-0 lead. The Norse pulled even with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits. In the top of the sixth, Macalester answered with RBIs from Miller on a grounder and Wolf on a sacrifice fly to take a 4-2 advantage. The score remained 4-2 into the bottom of the seventh inning, with the Scots recording the first two outs on a strikeout and a fly out. But a single, a triple and another single tied the score at 4-4 and forced extra innings.
After Macalester failed to score in the top of the eighth, the Norse moved the runner placed on second to third with a bunt. After a fielder's choice put runners on first and second, Rose Weber singled home the winning run for a 5-4 victory.
Bojorquez had two of the Scots' seven hits in the game. Miller allowed five runs, four earned, on 10 hits and a walk while striking out seven in 7 1/3 innings.
Macalester begins its Spring Break trip to Clermont, Fla., with games against Amherst and Eastern Connecticut State on Sunday, Mar. 15 at Legends Way Ballfields.
