ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Scots were bested by eighth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in Saturday's clash at the Leonard Center. Macalester is now 7-15 overall and 2-11 in conference play, while the Gusties jump to 21-1 overall and 13-0 in MIAC play.
Gustavus came out with their foot on the gas to start the contest connecting on some layups to jump out to a quick 7-0 advantage. First-year guard
Owen Walther (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) knocked down a triple to get the Scots on the board and then a turnover allowed sophomore guard
Joaquin Aguillon (San Rafael, Calif./ The Branson School) to connect on a transition three to get the Scots back in it. The Gusties then tightened up the screws and went on a 16-0 run that lasted over four minutes. Macalester was able to show signs of life when Walther connected on another triple and senior forward
Noah Shannon (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) converted a three-point play to bring the Scots to within 11. Gustavus would then push its lead up to 28, sending the Gusties to the locker room with a commanding 51-23 lead.
The Gusties came out of the half with a three ball to kick things off, which first-year guard
Noah Hamburge (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) matched with one of his own. Gustavus was able to convert a few more layups to continue fending off the Scots, then first-year guard
Gabriel Sahely (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) lit a spark for the Scots off of the bench. Macalester was able to go on a 13-0 run in which Sahely knocked down back to back triples, while Walther and junior guard
Kyle Jilla (Dallas, Texas/ Plano West) each followed up with one of their own. Despite a fight until the final whistle, the Scots would drop the contest by the score of 91-58.
Walther led the Scots in scoring, finishing the day off with 12 points. Hamburge was the other Scot in double figures with 11, while Sahely and Aguillon both contributed nine points. Shannon logged six boards to go with six assists for Macalester. Myles Barnette led Gustavus with 24 points to power the Gusties to the win.
The Scots are back home at the Leonard Center on Wed Feb. 11 for a battle with Saint John's University. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
