Women’s Basketball: Daley’s Double-Double Unable to Lift Scots Past Saints

ST. PAUL, Minn. –   In the second meeting of the season between the Scots and The College of Saint Scholastica, junior guard Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) notched a 15 point 11 rebound double-double. Despite the strong performance, the Scots were bested by the Saints by the score of 70-49. Macalester falls to 2-17 overall and 1-12 in conference action, while the Saints improve to 15-5 on the year and 10-3 in MIAC play.

After both teams kicked off the contest trading misses, junior guard Sydnee Smith (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) got the Scots established with 5 points down in the painted area. Macalester was able to get a few more stops and some free throws from senior forward Ellie Corbett (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) to jump out to a quick 7-2 advantage. The Saints were able to find their footing as they would end the quarter on a 9-2 run, giving them an 11-9 advantage heading into the second quarter.

To kick off the second, sophomore Samantha Smith  (Piedmont, Calif./ Piedmont) connected on a three pointer to put the Scots back up top. The two teams then went back and forth trading baskets, with Daley heating up and connecting on a triple of her own and a pair of layups to bring the Scots within one. That's as close as it would get in the half for Macalester, as the Saints would quickly answer with an 8-2 run to create some more space. On the Scots final possession of the half, sophomore guard Emma Karlin (Rockville, Md./ Richard Montgomery) knocked down a three ball to give the Scots some momentum heading into the half down 30-26.

In the third, the Saints continued to establish their presence in the paint and at the free throw line. Daley and Smith were able to give the Scots some life and hit some quick layups to keep it within four. St. Scholastica would overwhelm the Scots and close the quarter out on a 14-6 run, carrying a 48-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter. While the Scots were able to show some signs of life in the final quarter, the paint presence of the Saints appeared to be too much for Macalester. The Scots did all they could to come back, with first-year guard Faith Accardo (Thousand Oaks, Calif./ Oaks Christian) stringing together two three-pointers late in the game. Macalester ultimately fell 70-49.

Daley led the charge for the Scots, finishing with 15 points and 11 boards to notch the double-double. Smith, Karlin, and Accardo each poured in 7 for Macalester, with Corbett contributing two blocks. Kloey Lind led the way for the Saints finishing with 28 points and 11 rebounds en route to the win.
Macalester is back in action Saturday, Feb.7, where they will host Gustavus for a 1 p.m tip-off in the Leonard Center.
